The miniBunion™ system is a minimally-invasive surgical technique for implanting a micro-titanium implant. This patent-pending implant has been designed to provide immediate stability to a bunion patient’s foot to allow a fast return to activity.
Many people with bunions have them because of genetics. If this is the case, you will likely start to notice them in your 20s or 30s, but bunions can develop at any age. A genetic predisposition makes you prone to developing the bunion, and lifestyle factors cause the formation of the bunion to progress. Painful bunions are very common, with over three million adults in the United States suffering from them last year. Other causes of bunions are tight shoes, arthritis, and anything else that puts stress on the feet. Since shoes that are tight and narrow around the toes are one of the leading causes of bunions, more women develop them than men. High heels and other pointy toed shoes are notorious for causing bunions to form.
Since bunions come in different shapes and sizes, surgical treatment options will depend on the extent of your bunion - mild, moderate or severe. Other factors your surgeon will take into consideration when creating your treatment plan include your age, x-ray results, physical exam, and activity level. This will help your surgeon select the bunion procedure that is best suited for your bunion. Recovery time after bunion surgery varies greatly and depends a lot on the procedure or procedures selected by your surgeon.

This video by one of our top bunion deformity specialists, Dr. Eman Elmi, answers one of the most common questions our patients ask: How do bunions form?
Dr. Elmi discusses the small lifestyle changes you can make to control the progression of bunions, medications to help control pain, and more!
I was amazed at how knowledgeable, kind, and quickly he solved my problem of having a callus on the bottom of my foot - I had seen a couple of other podiatrists - one being at UCSF - and neither of them seemed to know what to do to stop the pain. My son had used Dr. Elmi and highly recommended him and being very tired of limping around in pain all the time, and without much hope, decided to at least try one more doctor. As I said at the beginning of this review, I could hardly believe how quickly and easily he not only got rid of the pain but showed me exactly what was causing it and exactly what insert to get and where to get it (REI). I've been just fine every since and we're so lucky to have Dr. Elmi right here in Strawberry/Mill Valley - he's the best!
